People of Action - Making a Difference
Solving real problems takes effort, commitment, and vision. Rotarians work to protect communities from preventable disease, keep women and children healthy, improvement education and economic outcomes, create safe water and sanitation infrastructure, and make our community and the world a more peaceful place.
We work together and with various partners on many ongoing projects:
Adopt-A-Highway: Be part of our Rotary Club's Adopt-a-Highway initiative, where we commit to cleaning and maintaining a stretch of local road, enhancing both our environment and community pride!
Hunger and Homelessness: To help against food insecurity and homelessness, each year we fundraise and also contribute with sweat equity to local food banks and kitchens, projects and school breakfast programs.
Christmas Wish Tree: Joined by our Christmas Wish Tree Partners; Walmart and The Salvation Army, a tree is set up and decorated with designated tags for donated gifts to disadvantaged adults.
Recycle Your Cycle: Our Club, along with 3 partners, collect used bikes, clean and service them, and rehome them to families-in-need, refugee and immigrant families. Waste materials are picked-up, properly disposed of, including further recycling of parts where the opportunity exists. We also raise funds to include new helmets with each cycle.
Literacy - Children and Youth Book Giveaways: Each year for the past nine years, approximately 800 to 1,000 new books are donated as giveaways to children in our communities.
Square Roots Sackville project: The aim of Square Roots Sackville is providing affordable produce bundles to the community. The Bundle Service purchases seconds produce from local farmers, which means less food is being thrown out. This project targets ANYONE who wants easy access to healthy and affordable food. The bundles of 10 lb. hearty fruit and vegetable, every second Saturday and sell for $10 or $5 or what you can afford. Square Roots reduces food waste and improves food security by redirecting NS grown produce to our communities. All funds raised go back into the project.
Interact: Our club sponsors a group of students at C.P. Allen High School in Bedford. We actively participate in the program including being a liaison between our Rotary Club and Interact to enhance their opportunities and results of Interact initiatives. Our goal is to instill the value of “service above self” in hopes that they will continue their service to others after high school with Rotaract, or Rotary. Interact hosts many important initiatives in their school and community including an annual signature event for Adolescent Mental Health. This is directly related to our Youth Initiative. The CP Allen Interact Club has been an official Chartered Interact Club since 2016.
Speakers: Every month the Club gathers to hear from interesting people. Topics range from the local to the international, from social causes to information for better living, new businesses and special leaders. In the last year we’ve heard about housing issues, food insecurity, developments in municipalities, personal cybersecurity, Operation Smile Canada, Sackville Rivers and Trails, etc. The topics are brought to the Club by its members.
Polio Eradication: Our Club and individual members provide funding to Rotary International to continue to combat Polio. Rotary has been involved in this fight for decades (recently in partnership with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and WHO). As the major not-for-profit organization in the endeavour, Rotary is committed to eradicating polio. Polio vaccine is purchased and Rotarians often volunteer to administer immunizations to children in remote and often war-torn areas of the world.
The Rotary International Foundation: Member and Club Funding is provided to our worldwide Foundation. This is often "matched" and used for disaster relief and humanitarian projects at home and in less fortunate countries. Rotary International oversees the distribution to ensure maximum effectiveness.
These are a few of the things we do. If any strike a chord with you, we'd love to have you join us!
